KCALDD Information Literacy Initiatives Survey Results
The Instructional Initiatives Committee of the Kansas Council of Academic Library Deans and Directors (KCALLD) (http://kcaldd.org/) sought information from their members to form a basis for their work by ascertaining from a survey conducted during April and May of 2019 the scope of Information Literacy instruction in the state. The results of the survey have been collated and the results are below. There were 18 responses to the survey.
1. Does your institution offer information literacy instruction in any format?
- Yes—100%
- No—0%
2. If you answered yes to the question above, in what formats does your institution offer information
literacy instruction? Choose all that apply.
- One shot information literacy sessions requested by faculty for specific classes—100%
- One-shot information literacy sessions offered by the library staff for walk-ins—61.1%
- A series of workshops—27.8%
- Credit-bearing course—44.4%
3. If you chose credit bearing course in the last question, is the course offered each semester?
- Yes—77.8%
- No—22.2%
4. How many credits does the course carry?
- 1—75%
- 2—12.5
- 3—12.5
5. Is the course offered face-to-face, or in both formats?
- Online only—25%
- Face-to-face—0%
- Both formats—75%
6. Which Information Literacy Standards were used in the design of the course?
- ACRL Framework (http://www.ala.org/acrl/standards/ilframework) or (http://www.ala.org/acrl/sites/ala.org.acrl/files/content/issues/infolit/Framework_ILHE.pdf)--100%
- Kansas State Literacy Standards or Guides: (https://www.literacyta.com/teaching-methods)--0%
Here is an additional comment given by Alan Bearman, Professor of History and Dean of University Libraries and the Center for Student Success and Retention at Washburn University. “I completed the survey, but there was nowhere for me to indicate that Washburn University has an Information Literacy Minor taught by our University Librarians. We have multiple Information Literacy courses, lower and upper-division, including both 1 and 3-credit hour courses all of which are graded. If possible, please add this information to that seen by the Instructional Initiatives Committee. Thank you,”

2) This in from Janet Williams
Hi, everyone. Happy Holidays from your KCALDD Vice President, Janet L. Williams. It’s almost time for finals so hang in there!
As President Micaela Ayers mentioned in last week’s e-mail, Mr. John Sheridan has recently resigned his post as Chair of Instructional Initiatives so his position needs to be filled as soon as possible.
Is there anyone who is already on the committee who is willing to step up and take his place? It would be so much easier for someone who is already familiar with the work of the committee to move into John’s place. Do we have any volunteers or nominations? If so, let me know by this Friday, Dec. 11, 2015. Otherwise we will open the position to the rest of the group next week.
Sincerely,
Janet L. Williams
Reference Librarian/Director of Library Services

In view of lack of agenda items, I’d like to cancel next week’s planned meeting in Manhattan for KCALDD. I’d like to encourage those of you on committees to use the time to meet either physically or virtually to make progress on their work.
If you haven’t yet voted for the bylaws changes (see previous email for details), please do so at the link previously sent.
Thank you, and enjoy the gift of time this holiday season.
Micaela
